In July we drove to Gallup, New Mexico on our way to South Dakota. We stayed at our favorite rv park, USA RV Park. We were there on July 4th and went to the Sports Complex to see the fireworks. Our route next took us to Las Vegas, New Mexico. We always enjoy this little town. We ate at Smiling Faces where we met a very nice couple from Santa Fe. From there we went to Colorado Springs where we stayed at Golden Eagle campgroound. May Nature Museum is an interesting place to visit adjacent to the campground. Mr. May collected insects from all around the world and many are on display at the museum. We finally made our way to Edgemont, South Dakota. We stayed at the fairgrounds campground. That night there was a severe thunderstorm. Sirens were blasting and that normally means a tornado. I tried to call the police station but the phone was disconnected so I called the local bar. The lady told me the siren just meant there was a severe storm in the area. The wind was brutal along with rain. The next day we drove to Jewel Cave and took the tour since our check in time at Comanche Park Campground in Custer was later in the afternoon. The campground is very nice with lots of trees and green grass. One day we drove to Spearfish Canyon. We drove by Sheridan Lake and Pactola Lake. A big sculpture of Abe Lincoln's head in on Hwy 14A. We enjoyed seeing Rocky Lock Falls and Bridal Veil Falls. In Hill City we took pictures of some chainsaw carvings. We went on two tours of Wind Cave. We heard the story of how the cave was discovered on the Natural Entrance tour. Two brothers were looking for a wounded deer. One brother noticed air blowing out of a hole. It blew his hat off. Next day they dynamited the hole to make it bigger. We saw a lot of box work in the cave. The box work is fragile like potato chips. The second tour was the Garden of Eden tour. We saw some interesting formations, inluding flowstone and frostwork with crystals. After the tour we went to the Crazy Horse Memorial. What a difference from our previous visit! There is a parking fee of $30 for two people. The visitor center is quite beautiful with a vast collection of native art. We enjoyed the drive to the Needles Highway, decided to drive through it in the opposite direction. The spires along the highway are amazing. We passed Sylvan Lake and then headed to Custer. We saw some buffalo on the way. In Custer we had fun walking around town and taking pictures of the painted buffalo. From Custer we went to the Badlands. The scenery is stunning. That night we had another severe thunderstorm. The wind actually lifted the end of our trailer. It was very scary. | ||
