2017 AIRSTREAM JOURNEYS
At the end of July we moved Monti to Cortez, Colorado. We went to Rico and visited with a friend from church. Then we drove to Mountain Village and took the Gondola to Telluride. The views were amazing.
I had to drive to Modesto, CA to once again help my mom and John stayed in Cortez for two weeks.
Upon my return we drove to Delta via Hwy 141. The highway is called Unaweep/Tabewache (pronounced Tab - E -Wach Byway). The red rocks are even more stunning than Sedona. We stopped in Naturita to see the Hanging Flume which was used in gold mining for three years. The original flume was 13 miles long. The gold was so fine it wasn't very profitable. Highway 141 has one spectacular view after another.
From Delta we drove to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. We enjoyed the various overlooks. After an overnight stay in Montrose we drove to Ouray. Ouray and Silverton are quaint little towns.
We visited friends that we had made at the YMCA gym. They have a beautiful place in Dolores.
We scheduled a tour at Mesa Verde with David Nighteagle. We hiked to Oak Tree House via ropes and steps in the rock. Oak Tree House has six kivas. The next day we drove up Weatherill Mesa. We hoped to see some wild horses there but only saw scat. John came up here while I was in California and saw some horses. Later we hiked to Step House which is in a lovely alcove.
On another trip we drove back to our friends place in Dolores where we met their friends. We all drove up the West Dolores road. We ended up on Spring Creek Basin road where we were greeted by a herd of horses. Two of them came right up to the car. Farther down the road is a horse sanctuary. We saw two small herds of horses. We had a nice picnic lunch and then headed back. We had a flat tire so there was a little adventure on our way home.
Another trip was up the West Dolores road to Dunton which seems to be a private resort with hot springs. We saw some early fall color.
