Yachats is about 12 miles south of Waldport. There are old growth forests to the east and the ocean and beaches to the west. The Yachats Ocean Road drive follows the beach with some nice views of the ocean.

Just north of town is Smelt Sands State Park. This is now one of our favorite places to watch the waves pound the rocks at high tide. We also enjoyed exploring the tide pools at low tide. There is a nice walking path along the sea.

The drive along Yachats River road follows the river through farmland and at one point ends at a covered bridge. There is a huge old tree next to the bridge. After seeing the covered bridge we took the other fork in the road and it winds through the beautiful forest and ends up at Cape Perpetua. The wildflowers were in profusion along the road.

We hiked the boardwalk trail down to Devil's Churn in Cape Perpetua. The waves come crashing into a narrow chasm here. We hiked the trail to a stone shelter above Cape Perpetua. The views were amazing. We also visited Cook's Chasm and Spouting Horn. At high tide or in a storm the waves crash under the rocks and shoot out at Spouting Horn. The day we were there it didn't happen. We did get some good views of the water shooting up at Thor's Well and waves crashing into Cook's Chasm.
