The trip to Tortuguero was an extenson to our Costa Rica trip. We were the only ones to sign up for it. So essentially it was a private tour with our tour guide and a boatman.

Tortuguero is a sand bar with a lagoon on one side and the Caribbean ocean on the other. There are tiger sharks in the ocean and crocs in the lagoon. So no swimming in either place!! The village of Tortuguero is lovely. We saw green macaws and some parakeets.

We enjoyed all of our boat tours and saw a lot of wildlife: monkeys, herons and other birds, basalisk (which run very fast on the surface of the water), an otter, racoon and cayman. Also iguanas. And one very large boa in a bush.

The Mawamba Lodge gardens were filled with beautiful flowers and plants. We enjoyed our rustic cabin. At night we would open our shutters and fall asleep listening to the ocean waves.
