Airstream Journeys - 2009, Our trip across the U.S. in our Airstream
2009 found us Airstreaming across the Northeastern U. S. The journey began April 13th. From New Mexico to Maine and back again, this was a very rainy summer.
Some of the more memorable highlights are the Will Rogers Museum in Oklahoma, the George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, Missouri and the St. Louis Arch. We enjoyed visiting Hannibal, Mark Twain’s birthplace. In Indiana we had fun visiting with new friends and spending a rainy weekend at a Bluegrass festival.
In Illinois we spent time at the Abraham Lincoln Museum and Presidential Library. The courthouse in Springfield is beautiful and we also had fun finding “treasures” along Route 66.
Pennsylvania is a beautiful state. We went to the National Aviary in Pittsburg, glimpsed Amish life in Lancaster and went back to the 1700’s in Philadelphia.
In Maine we took a five day trip on the Schooner Mary Day. It was a fun experience. The Maine coastline is gorgeous and the forests and lakes are beautiful also. We spent a month in Maine and then three weeks in the Adirondacks. We were awestruck by Niagara Falls.
The Dakotas were impressive, with Mt. Rushmore, the Needles Highway, the Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the Enchanted Highway. Oh yes, the buffalo and amber waves of grain too.
In Nebraska we learned more about the early pioneers who drove their wagons westward and about the Plains Indians. We spent a few days in Dodge City, Kansas where cattle is king!!
We arrived home in early October and we are already planning our trip for 2010. There are always more adventures waiting....
May all your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view, where something strange and more beautiful and more full of wonder than your deepest dreams waits for you.
